Throwback: 7 Rock hits from the year 2000!

What a throw-back. Remember when “Running Away,” came out back in the year 2000? Seriously, it’s been 16-years since some of our favorite hits dropped. I remember walking to school and listening to a few of these hits. They got me through the day and through most of my trials. Do you have any favorite songs that are a ‘blast from the past?’

Hoobastank – Running Away

Remember when Hoobastank made it big with their first single “Crawling in The Dark?” The Australian scene absolutely loved the new jam. It was their second single off their début self titled album “Running Away.” The song made it big with fans that were between the ages of 14 to 25.

Then Running Away came with its rhythmic guitar melodies. It had enough of a mix to make it easy listening rock. The song gets more and more powerful until the end. And the lyrics to the song are absolutely relatable.

Fun fact: Hoobastank went to school with band members from Incubus.

Breaking Benjamin – The Diary of Jane

The Diary of Jane was released in 2006 as the lead single from of Breaking Benjamin’s third album “Phobia.” The song is about a guy who loves a girl (it might sound cliché) but finds out that she never loved him back, “I’ll still try to find my place in the diary of Jane.”

The band did a total of three versions. The first was normal (as you probably remember the track) and the second is nearly the same but ends with a note lower than the first version. The third is much softer because it’s an acoustic rendition of the song that features Sebastian Davin singing back vocals!

Fact: “Season 4 American Idol contestant Sarah Mather plays Jane in the song’s music video. The clip ends with Ben Burnley closing a diary on Jane’s tombstone. The name was revealed to be Jane Bryan during the second episode of the band’s podcast. Jane Bryan was an American actress whose screen career lasted only four years, but she appeared in prominent roles in a number of memorable films before she married a drugstore magnate in 1940 and retired. Whether or not the band meant for her name to be of significance is unknown, and unconfirmed, however it may be relevant that one of her movies, We Are Not Alone, shares its title with that of Breaking Benjamin’s sophomore album.”

The Killers – Mr. Brightside

Mr. Brightside is about a jealous and paranoid guy who suspects that his love is cheating on him. Guitarist Dave Keuning wrote this song about lead singer Brandon Flowers’ ex girlfriend that cheated on him. Flowers opened up to Q magazine back in March of 2009 about how he found out his girl was cheating. He said:

“I was asleep and I knew something was wrong. I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor and my girlfriend was there with another guy.”

Switchfoot – Meant to Live

Switchfoot’s “Meant to Live,” was one of those songs that we could relate too during hard times. It didn’t matter what we were going through we could always sing “We were meant to live for some much more,” and feel a small sense of peace through this music.

The song is about finding a fulfillment through God. And the lyrics are about this imperfect world we live in and why we were “Meant to live for so much more.”

Fact: They played this song on the film Spiderman 2

Jimmy Eat World – The Middle

How many times did we got to school and feel like we didn’t fit in? I swear, that was most my of middle school years. This song was about fitting in and how you do not need to be the same as others to be popular.

A young fan once wrote Jim Adkins about not fitting in with the crowd at school because she wasn’t “punk enough for them.” He opened up about the email saying:

“The tenet of the punk ideal – or, you know, the alternative, outside-the-mainstream, kind of ideal – is that you think yourself being more accepting … I guess that tune was kind of a reaction to that, like you don’t want to be friends with them anyway.”

This song was how Jimmy Eat World broke out. They released their first album in 1994. And the song climbed to #1 on the “Modern Rock chart in 2001,” and even made #5 on the Hot 100 in summer of 2002. Jim Adkins never thought the song would make it as far as it did because it was “too simple.” He said:

He told NME: “There’s definitely a stigma, I think, when you’re working that if something is too easy, it’s not earned, you know… you develop your idea quickly, it’s not earned. So I thought ‘Middle’ was kind of not as good as some of the other songs because I hadn’t like sweat over it so much. But I mean you gotta – sometimes you gotta let that go and be cool with it.”

Fact: This has been one of Taylor Swift’s favorite songs since she was young. She opened up about the track making her feel comfortable. She said:

“I felt comforted by it, because I never felt like I really fit perfectly into any clique at school,” she told Rolling Stone.

Default – Wasting My Time

Wasting My Time was recorded by Canadian rock band “Default,” for their 2001 studio debut album. And it was released in September 2001. The song was written by members of the band Chad Kroeger and Rick Parashar.

It’s one of those songs that you want to listen to after a horrible break up and you feel like you’ve wasted all your time. This was a good one for those that took a chance on someone but feel they wasted their time on someone who wasn’t good enough for them.

Fact: The music video for Default’s “Wasting My Time,” was filmed in downtown Toronto, Ontario outside Westin Harbour Castle. It was also directed by Noble Jones and premiered in August 7, 2001.

Drive – Incubus

I love this song because it seems like fear can control us a lot in life. This song is about fear and being controlled by it most of your life and how all your choices are driven by fear. It’s about imagining life if you didn’t live that way.

Fact: The artwork for the video was done by Boyd and drummer Jose Pasillas. It took them over 50 hours to complete.
